Cagliari, Sardinia
As we write our entry this evening, we hope y’all are having
a Happy Thanksgiving. We complete our 5th
week of our journey today; we seen so-o-o-o-o much and have enjoyed every
minute of our adventure!
We arrived in Cagliari this morning and were off the ship at
9:00am. We walked up a tree-lined street
to Piazza Yenna, where we had hoped to have had a walking tour of the
city. However, it never happened and he
or she was a “no show” so we decided to go it alone. Cagliari is a steep city and of course, the
attractions are at the top of the hill (more like mountain!!), so we trekked
upward!!
On our way to the amphitheater ruins, we passed two churches
(maybe more); the public hospital, with no parking, expect the street in front;
a series of large ornate university buildings dedicated to bio-medicine and
science; narrow, sharply winding streets with little or no sidewalks; and a
Roman Amphitheater that looked a little better than a pile of rubble!
But we trudged onward and were not disappointed as we found
some really nice sights as we descended; the elephant’s tower with its medieval
defensive gates; eye-level elements of the churches in the Bastille of San
Croce; an elevator that would take you back to the bottom, but was
out-of-order; and again windy, twisty streets with no sidewalks and room for
only one car!! Lots of steps and we
returned to the Piazza Yenna where we were to meet our guide and back down the
tree-lined street to the pier and our floating home! A-A-A-A-H!
We shared a pizza and Robbi went to play Mah-Jongg and John
went to sit in the sun and read. Not
your typical Thanksgiving, but we enjoyed it all the same.
As we prepare to leave Sardinia, we look forward to turkey,
ham, dressing, and pumpkin and pecan pie with a Holland America twist! A day at sea tomorrow, resting up for Gibraltar,
Cadiz, Spain, and Casablanca, Morocco!
Have a happy happy Thanksgiving!!
ReplyDeleteHope you all had a nice Thanksgiving dinner on the ship. That's a real disappointment about your tour. Were there other people waiting for it as well?
